Melbourne: family visits

While in Melbourne, Nic and I stayed with Nic’s brother and his family. Nic’s brother has three children – Daniel, aged 6, Julian, aged 4, and Michael, aged 1. Let me tell you, three little boys = a hell of a lot of noise. Also a lot more rough-and-tumble than my delicate constitution is used to. There were a few moments when I was genuinely alarmed at the force with which the boys were pummeling each other. No one else batted an eyelid. Clearly, I was the one who grew up without brothers.

Anyhoo, while we were there, Julian had his 4th birthday party. I stayed up late the night before to help Nic’s sister-in-law with the birthday cake, which, we were informed by Julian, was to be Elmo. We had strict instructions. It took us HOURS. Mainly because we decided to pipe on the icing to make it look more like fur, and because we had to dye the fondant for the nose and mouth by hand (yes, you can imagine what my hands looked like after THAT). But, I think the effort was worth it, because the cake turned out pretty damn well if I do say so myself.

Here is Juju with his cake. It met with his approval.

Julian has not yet mastered the fine art of smiling on demand.  When you point a camera at him and say, “Juju, smile”, he twists his mouth into this weird kind of grimace. OMG it makes me laugh so much:
