“We are not nouns, we are verbs. I am not a thing – an actor, a writer – I am a person who does things – I write, I act – and I never know what I am going to do next. I think you can be imprisoned if you think of yourself as a noun.”
– Stephen Fry
My name is Kylie and here’s what I do:
I read and write
I love language – the flow of words from a gentle tongue or a steady pen. I especially love the complex interplay between words and silence, and how sometimes the most important things are said with the fewest possible words. (My boyfriend thinks I’m a little too sensitive to tones).
… a lot. Sometimes this is a good thing, this quest to be a thoughtful person. But I have a tendency to overdo it sometimes – the thoughts bleeding into worries. Because of this, my life pursuit could be characterised as a search for grounding and calmness. For acceptance instead of anxiety; for optimism instead of apprehension.
I am a perpetual student. I am currently doing my PhD in copyright law, I take French lessons on the side and I still hope to fit “learning to be a proper yogi” in there somewhere.
I am one of those people who is always on the go; always busy. I am constantly juggling work, study, friends, family, exercise, writing, and a million other things. Sometimes the balls drop. Sometimes I forget the art of prioritising effectively. I get torn between ambition and the yearning for rest, and I battle time more often than I should. (Dear time, we will be friends one day, I know we will). But when I strip everything else away, what I really long for is a simple life – sunshine, good food, yoga on the beach.
: my boyfriend, my kitten, my home in Brisbane’s inner city where the river flows idly by beneath my apartment window. I love meeting new people. I’ve already made some beautiful friends through this little bloggy space of mine, and I’d love to meet you too. Say hello, won’t you?
My blog is an effort to live an examined life. It is about reflection and introspection, language and expression. It is about finding beauty and whimsy in my life and my city. Most of all, I seek to convey warmth and authenticity, and for my blog to reflect the things I cherish. Things like:
- A good book and a hot bath;
- Fresh coffee;
- Laughter and crinkly eyes;
- A soft touch;
- Sun reflecting on water;
- The right word and the right punctuation placed just so;
- And other such things.
